More Perfect: Wabi-Sabi
An S2C formatted lesson about the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi and the master of Haiku, Bashō
What is perfect anyway?! When a new client comes through my door, one thing I try to undo fast is the idea that a mispoke is a mistake. Would I expect someone learning a new sport to immediately master it? No way.
The same with life. We were never meant to be great at it all the time. I decided early on that used cars that already have a couple scratches and lovely but sturdy furnishings are the best for my psyche.
Guess what, I like the faded paint stains on my wood table. They remind me of glitter covered kid craft hands. And smiles and delight. I don’t love the chalk drawing on my stucco but I’ve been assured, it was a one time thing.
I like the resurgence of cool mending, of patching and fixing, of gold filling in the cracks to make a new bowl. It feels more real than a sterile “perfect” instagram post.
This lesson turned more haiku than wabi-sabi, but hey, it isn’t meant to be perfect.
Also, this lesson is later than normal. We went to Disneyland yesterday. First time for the kids…
