When I worked at a video game development company, that place was a vault. Iron clad NDA’s and all visitors had to check in at the front to be buzzed in the locked studio door. Turns out new video games that make a bazillion dollars are super secret until they come out. Like, sometimes hackers get the FBI called on them.
The same podcast, Stuff You Should Know that brought you the mini lesson on candy corn recently had an episode entitled “How Intellectual Property Works”. Might sound like a snooze fest but as someone who almost accidentally got kicked out of college for plagiarizing myself (it’s a thing), ideas and ownership of ideas is fascinating to me.
There are so many non-speakers starting blogs, writing books, and being given the chance to contribute intellectually to our world (finally) and I want to begin giving them the knowledge to be able to confidently navigate the world of ideas.
As you’ve probably noticed from my references, I use Wikimedia Commons a lot in my lessons. It’s a central location for people to upload photos with a user license. It makes me feel much more comfortable to know I can use the pictures, give the credit due, and be confident that I’m using them in the way the author intended.
Anyway, I hope you all enjoy it! Feel free to share.
Happy Spelling!
